Field guide

What a Florida company lookup returns

A Registry Verify lookup returns up to five Florida filings that match a business name, with the fields the Florida Division of Corporations publishes for each filing and the name of the Florida file each record came from. The data comes from the Division's own corporate data files, about 13 million records, and we load Florida's new daily files once a day.

Where the data comes from

The Florida Division of Corporations runs Sunbiz, Florida's public search of business filings. It also publishes its filings as bulk data files: a quarterly snapshot of its corporate records, daily files of new and changed filings, and daily files of status events. We start from the quarterly snapshot and load Florida's new daily files once a day.

The files are fixed width text, so we parse each record into named fields and keep the name of its source file. Every match names its source in provenance: the publisher, the file, and the Division's data download page.

The dataset block in every answer, and /data-status on this site, give the date of the newest daily file we hold, the number of records, and whether the data is stale.

Field by field

The answer

query and match_count
The name you sent and how many candidate filings came back, at most five.
matches
The candidate filings, closest name first. With home_state, filings formed in that state come first.
dataset
Coverage and freshness: the jurisdiction and coverage, the dates of the oldest and newest daily files we hold (source_file_date_start and source_file_date_end), the newest status event file (latest_event_file_date), the record count and file counts, when we last downloaded from Florida and finished an import (source_retrieved_at and last_ingested_at), the record counts and result of that import, and stale, which is true when our last import finished more than seven days ago. complete_registry and authoritative_no_match are false on every answer, because we do not claim that the files we hold contain every Florida filing. warning says so in one sentence.
result_interpretation
One sentence each on what a match, a no match, a status, a similarity score and a home state mean.
same_name_across_home_states
A note for each name that both a Florida filing and a filing formed elsewhere hold in these results. That often means one business registered twice, and it can also mean two unrelated businesses.
home_state_query
Present only when you send home_state. It says how many candidates name that state as their home state, and says plainly when none does.
history_begins_on and history_note
The first date our status change history covers, and a sentence on what that means. We hold no changes from before that date.

Each filing

doc_number
The Florida document number. Anyone can look it up on Sunbiz.
name
The name as filed with Florida.
status, status_label and status_as_reported_by
What Florida reports: A Active or I Inactive, and who reports it, the Florida Division of Corporations.
filing_type and filing_type_label
The kind of filing, such as FLAL Florida Limited Liability Company or DOMP Domestic For-Profit Corporation. A type that starts with FOR is a company formed outside Florida and registered in Florida.
file_date
The date the filing was made in Florida. For a company formed elsewhere, it is the date it registered in Florida.
principal_city and principal_zip
The city and ZIP code of the principal address on the filing.
ra_name
The registered agent, the person or company named to receive legal papers for the business in Florida.
officers
Up to six officers or managers, each with a title, name, address, city, state and ZIP code. more_than_six_officers is true when Florida's record says the filing has more.
similarity and similarity_basis
How close the filing's name is to the name you sent, from 0 to 1, and what was compared. It compares names only. It is not a confidence that you found the right company.
home_state and state_country
The home state Florida's record names, in words, with a plain sentence. For a company formed elsewhere it links to that state's own business search and names the office that keeps that register. A code Florida does not document is returned as a code we cannot read, not guessed. state_country is the raw code as Florida's record holds it.
annual_report
Whether the filing is current on its Florida annual report. The state is filed, due (not on file and 1 May has not passed), late (1 May has passed), dissolution_date_passed (the fourth Friday of September has passed without it), not_due_yet (made this year), inactive (no report owed), or unknown or rule_not_checked when we cannot say. The block also gives the due date, the September dissolution date, the newest report on file, a plain sentence, the Florida file the reports were read from, and links to the Florida Statutes behind the rule.
annual_reports
The raw list behind annual_report: up to the last three reports Florida's record lists, each with a year and a filing date. Florida often repeats the same report twice.
history
When we first saw the filing in Florida's daily files (first_seen_on) and its most recent status change, if we recorded one (last_status_change, with the date, the new status and the daily file), with a note on how far back our history goes.
source_file and provenance
The Florida file the record came from, its publisher, and the Division's data download page.

These are the values our search returned on 2 November 2026 for its first candidate, Publix Super Markets, Inc., shortened to the main fields and one of the six officers Florida lists. A paid answer also carries home_state, annual_report and history for each filing, and same_name_across_home_states, the start date of our status history and the full dataset block for the whole answer, which the field guide describes. limit=1 keeps the example short. Leave it out to get up to five candidates when a name could belong to more than one filing.

Limits

  • Florida only. A lookup tells you nothing about other states' registers.
  • Search is by business name. Lookups by EIN, address or officer name are not available.
  • At most five candidates come back per call, ranked by name similarity.
  • A result is a candidate name match, not proof of identity.
  • Status is what Florida's files report. When Florida dissolves a filing for a missing annual report, our status may show the change only after we load Florida's next quarterly file. The annual report sentence says so when it applies.
  • The home state comes from Florida's record of the company, not from the other state's register, and we do not check how the company stands there.
  • A no match answer does not prove that a business is absent from Florida's records.

The agent guide shows how an agent should act on each of these fields.
